a little taste of home

📷

Home (geographically) will always be in the Philippines, and the food, no matter what it is, will always remind me of it. My mom's cooking is the best taste of my home. If you try and look up authentic filipino food in Ohio... you won't find that many. Maybe 5 tops. For my hometown that I grew up in here in the US, they also get a little taste of it because of my mother. She owns a little ice cream shop called Espy's that also serves her filipino fried rice, lumpia (egg rolls), and crab ragoons. But this post isn't about her shop, its about another family member who started an amazing restaurant with a full menu of not only filipino food but also vietnamese!

It was started by big brother Lorenz Medina, his beautiful other half Michelle and her sisters. It's called Dai Trang Bistro and is located in 4970 Union Center Pavillion Dr, West Chester Township. If you know where, or if you've been to the IKEA in Cincinnati then you're right there! Trust me, it's very worth the drive. They will treat you like family, even if you've never been there before. Just the type of hospitality us filipinos offer.

To start make sure you order one of their milk teas or smoothies (picture above). They have 40+ flavors! Tyler and my favorite is the taro (its like a purple yam) smoothie, Adam loves the red bean smoothie, and don't forget to add bobas! (chewy tapioca balls). You won't be disappointed. Adam always orders two, one before dinner and one after haha. We rarely get appetizers because our dishes are so big but this time we ordered the fried shrimp.

Most of the entrees come with white rice but for us, we love their garlic rice. I especially love mine with egg on top. I ordered the Bicol Express with pork. Its simmered in coconut milk and shrimp paste with spicy hot peppers, onions, garlic, and ginger. I love my food spicy so I got it in a level 3.

Adam ordered the Ginataang Papaya with Shrimp. It's also also a coconut milk dish but instead of hot peppers it's made with lemongrass or ginger and papaya. He doesn't love spicy food as much as I do.

Tyler has been stuck on also a favorite of mine, Longanisa. Its a filipino homemade sweet sausage. It's the best breakfast food ever! You wont like regular sausage with your breakfasts after this one. With garlic rice and eggs. He couldn't wait for me to take my picture as you can tell.

I wish we had the stomach to order more so I could show all of you all the different types of food they have, but all we had room for was our go to. I didn't even get to show the desserts. Take my word for it though, or better yet you should all just go and order it for yourselves! Until then check them out on facebook Dai Trang Bistro and instragram @daitrangbistro. They also have lots of photos you can check out!

Next trip, I'll order something different just for you guys :)
